Mrs. Virginia Negus “Ginny” Phillips, age 96, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, while residing at Somerby Senior Living in Peachtree City, Georgia. A woman of unwavering Christian faith, Ginny lived her life guided by her love for God, her devotion to family, and a servant’s heart toward others.
Born on June 8, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, Ginny was the daughter of Wayland and Hester (Harvey) Negus. She and her beloved sister, Jackie, spent their childhood years in Illinois, creating memories and a bond that would last a lifetime. After graduating from high school, Ginny attended Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, where a chance meeting in The Varsity parking lot led her to the love of her life, Billy “Bill” Mack Phillips.
Ginny and Bill were married on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1954, beginning a remarkable marriage that would span more than six decades. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and love, raising three sons: Billy (Dianne) Phillips Jr. of Gray, Georgia; David (Judy) Phillips of Asheville, North Carolina; and Charles (Cheryl) Phillips of Brooks, Georgia.
Nothing brought Ginny greater joy than her family. She was a devoted grandmother to Amanda (Anthony) Brown, Bonnie (Daniel) Calkin, Jennifer (Gabi) Negrea, Billy (Emily) Phillips III, Katherine (Ethan) Young, Connor Phillips, and Catelyn Phillips. She was also the proud great-grandmother of 19 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense happiness to her life. She cherished her role as aunt to Russ (Charlene) Taylor, Nick (Rhonda) Taylor, and Virginia (Paul) Nurmi.
Ginny’s faith was the foundation of her life. As a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Thomaston, she faithfully served her church family through the House of Care ministry and as a member of the choir for more than 40 years. Whether through service, worship, or quiet acts of kindness, she reflected Christ’s love in the way she cared for others. Her faith was not simply something she professed—it was something she lived each day.
She also worked in the library at R. E. Lee High School, where her love of books and learning was evident to all who knew her. A devoted wife and partner, Ginny proudly supported Bill throughout his career with B.F. Goodrich, Uniroyal, and WesTex, as well as during his years of service in the Georgia Army National Guard. Together they shared a love of travel, attending conventions and special events while exploring destinations throughout the United States and abroad. Their many journeys created cherished memories and lifelong friendships.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures—painting, needlepoint, reading, and spending time with those she loved. Whether sharing a meal, a conversation, or a trip with family and friends, Ginny had a gift for making people feel welcomed and cared for.
In addition to her parents, Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Mack "Bill" Phillips; her son, Billy Phillips Jr.; and her sister, Jackie.
A celebration of Ginny's life will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Thomaston with Rev. Bryan McPherson and Rev. Andy Johnston officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service in the sanctuary. Following the service she will laid to rest beside her husband at South View Cemetery.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the management and staff of Somerby of Peachtree City, Southern Grace Hospice, and Donalee Dunn and her dedicated caregivers for the compassionate and loving care they provided to Ginny.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Thomaston, Georgia, or Youth for Christ in Parker, Colorado.
While her family grieves her absence, they rejoice in the assurance that she is now at home with her Savior, reunited with loved ones who have gone before her. The faith that sustained Ginny throughout her life now brings comfort and hope to those who mourn her passing. Her legacy of faith, kindness, devotion, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
