Mrs. Martha Ethridge Helms, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2026, at her home in Thomaston, Georgia. She was 85 years old.
Martha was born July 7, 1940, in Thomaston, a daughter of the late Eugene Virgil Ethridge and the late Mackie Tidwell Ethridge. She graduated from R.E. Lee Institute in the Class of 1958, a foundation that served her well throughout her life. For many years, she was the owner and operator of Parkway Flowers and Gifts, where she was known for her hard work and determination. She had no plans to retire, always keeping busy and engaged in her work.
A member of Clark's Chapel Baptist Church, Martha’s faith was an important part of her life. She was also an excellent cook, remembered fondly for the meals she lovingly prepared for her family. Alongside her husband, Jerry, she traveled the world, creating lasting memories and experiences.
Her proudest accomplishment was her family. She loved her family deeply, especially her grandchildren, who brought her great joy. Martha is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Jerry Helms of Thomaston; her sons, Jeppy (Brittany) Helms and Keith (Elizabeth) Helms, both of Thomaston; her sister, LaRose (Lamar) Storey of Columbia, South Carolina; her six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Martha will be held on Sunday, April 26, at 3:00 PM, at Clark’s Chapel Baptist Church. Rev. Dean Hemphill will officiate, and interment will follow at South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM, on Sunday at the church.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Clark’s Chapel Baptist Church, 176 Mathis Lake Road, Thomaston, GA 30286.
She will be remembered for her steadfast work ethic, loving nature, and the light she brought to her family’s lives. Martha’s legacy lives on in those who loved her and the many lives she touched throughout her journey.
