Mrs. Marijo Cook Stevens

Mrs. Marijo Cook Stevens, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Upson Regional Medical Center. She was 88 years old.

Marijo was born on January 19, 1938, in Thomaston, a daughter of the late William Marvin Cook, Sr. and the late Thelma Waldrop Cook. A lifelong resident of Thomaston, she was a 1956 graduate of R.E. Lee Institute and continued her education at Tift College, graduating in 1960. Marijo devoted many years of her life to public education. She began her career as a student teacher with Pike County Schools and later taught in both the Thomaston City and Upson County school systems, including R.E. Lee Junior High School, Westwood, and Upson High School. Beyond the classroom, she was a devoted homemaker who took great pride in raising her three boys and supporting her husband and family throughout the years.

Her Christian faith was an important part of her life from an early age. Marijo was raised at First Baptist Church of Thomaston, where she was baptized. She later became a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she and Harold were married and where she remained a member for more than 50 years. In 2015, she returned to First Baptist Church. Throughout the years, Marijo was actively involved in the life of the church, serving in the nursery, volunteering with Vacation Bible School, and participating in many other church activities. Marijo also had a lifelong love of reading. An avid reader, she accumulated a vast collection of books over the years and rarely lacked something new to read.

Marijo is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Harold Stevens; her three sons, Danny Stevens, David Stevens, and Doug Stevens; her brothers, Berry (Betsy) Cook and Wayne Cook; her grandchildren, T.J. Washburn, Elizabeth Grace Stevens, Lila Jo Stevens, David Lee Stevens, Derrick Stevens, Jeremy Stevens, Jordan (Aaron Walber) Thomas, Kristen Nunn, and Erica (John) Mays; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Cook and Ed Cook.

Funeral services for Mrs. Stevens will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Thomaston. Rev. Bryan McPherson, Rev. Ted Kandler, and Rev. Marc Pritchett will officiate. Interment will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM on Tuesday evening, at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.
