Mrs. Glenda Beverly VanHouten, a devoted nurse, wife, and mother passed away peacefully at her residence in Thomaston, Georgia, on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the age of 78.
Glenda was born on February 9, 1947, she was a beacon of compassion and care throughout her life—a reflection of the nurturing spirit that defined her as both a caregiver and an individual. Glenda's professional journey was marked by her unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of others. A graduate of the R. E. Lee Institute, class of 1965, she furthered her education in nursing, earning an Associate Degree from Gordon College followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgia Southwestern State University. For many years, she served as an ICU/Special Care nurse before taking on the esteemed roles of Infection Control Director and Director of Employee Health at Upson Regional Medical Center. Her dedication to her vocation was unmatched; indeed, she would have continued her work if her health had allowed. Beyond her professional endeavors, Glenda embraced hobbies that spoke to her artistic soul, finding joy in the delicate art of seamstress work and the vibrant expression of painting. Glenda and Ronnie loved to travel, and they went and explored many places together. Glenda was known for her decorating and always made a beautiful home. She enjoyed cooking, especially her fruitcake cookies that she would share with family and friends. She was also a dedicated member of Trinity Baptist Church where she was the church treasurer, a choir member, and a Vacation Bible School volunteer.
A nurturing caretaker, Glenda was a calming presence to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was enriched by her marriage to her high school sweetheart, Ronald Wayne "Ronnie" VanHouten, with whom she shared 59 years of love and partnership. Together, they created a family that continues to thrive. Glenda leaves behind her beloved daughter, Lisa Kay VanHouten Caldwell, and her adored grandchildren: Erin Caldwell, Ethan Caldwell, Emily Caldwell, and Ean Caldwell. She is also remembered fondly by her sister-in-law, Debbie VanHouten Brooks, and her nieces and nephew: Michele Harrell, Shannon Brooks, and Christy Futch.
Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn Gordon Beverly and Martha Purifoy Terpstra, her beloved husband Ronnie, her sons, Glenn A. VanHouten and John Thomas VanHouten, and her brothers-in-law, Robby Brooks and Donald VanHouten.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Glenda will be held Wednesday, June 11, at 2:00 PM, at Trinity Baptist Church. Rev. Bob Wilson will officiate, and a private family interment will follow the service. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Wednesday, at Trinity Baptist Church.
