There was only one Freddie Helms, and on Sunday, September 13, 2026, heaven gained quite a character. William F. “Freddie” Helms, age 89, of Thomaston, passed away at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation.
Mr. Helms was born on August 8, 1937, in Thomaston, a son of the late Henry Aldine Helms and Marion Gertrude Helms. He worked for many years as a veterinary assistant with Wesley Chapel Animal Hospital.
Freddie never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. A character in the truest sense, his outgoing personality and sense of humor made him one of a kind. A night owl through and through, Freddie often slept much of the day and enjoyed walking around the pond and fountain at night. He kept his own hours and lived life his own way, which was simply part of what made Freddie, Freddie.
Freddie was also an avid University of Georgia fan and held season tickets for many years. He loved his Georgia Bulldogs and enjoyed following them through the seasons.
Above all, Freddie was a loving brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Freddie was preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia Helms Tucker; his twin brother, Ted Helms; and his brother, Lamar Helms.
He is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Helms Hewett, Brenda Helms Barfield, and Pam Helms (David) Boyt; his brothers, Sammy Helms and Tim (Deanna) Helms; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Freddie will be held, Wednesday, September 16, at 2:00 PM, at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Rev. Johnny Brazelton will officiate and interment will follow at South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 1:00 until 2:00 PM, at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.
Fletcher-Day Funeral Home of Thomaston is honored to serve the Helms family. Condolences and remembrances may be expressed at fletcherdayfuneralhome.com.
