Mr. Isham Lamar Hinson, III

June 5, 1958 — October 11, 2025

“It was my blessing to have Lamar as my son.” — His mother.

With hearts full of love and gratitude, the family of Isham Lamar Hinson III announces his homegoing on October 11, 2025, at the age of 67. To know Lamar was to be blessed—by his faith, his fierce devotion to family and friends, and a wit so quick he could have you laughing within minutes. He thought fast, cared deeply, and met life with courage and curiosity.

A proud Georgian, Lamar was a graduate of R.E. Lee Institute, Oxford College, Emory University, and Georgia State University. Brilliant and endlessly curious, once he mastered a challenge, he was on to the next adventure—and he could recall exactly what he’d learned at just the right moment. He was excellent at Jeopardy!

Lamar’s professional path reflected his wide-ranging gifts. He began in Delta Air Lines’ computer department, where he delighted in spontaneous trips—flying to Maine for lobster and home the same day—and where his parents loved the perks of seeing the world together. He later served as a nurse, a vocation that matched his instinct to rush toward need. Long before he earned his nursing credentials, he saved a man’s life who collapsed on the Emory track—one of many times God placed him at the right place at the right time. He also worked as a lawyer and a realtor, applying his sharp mind and big heart to advocate for others.

At home, Lamar was an incredible chef who could turn any fridge into a feast, and a master gardener who planted 23 fruit trees, mapping every bed and bloom with care. He loved to read, travel, play golf, hunt, fish, kayak, and to study fine colognes. He also loved keeping up with everyone on Facebook, where every Easter he shared Billy Graham’s message: “Now is the time to receive the Lord…”

Faith ordered Lamar’s life—Jesus first, then family, then friends—and it showed. Our front porch in Atlanta became “Lamar’s office,” where neighbors watched for him, pulled in, and found wise, Godly counsel. One afternoon there were thirteen cars in the drive and Lamar was “holding court,” listening, encouraging, and pointing people to hope. On trains in Europe, on sidewalks at home—again and again—Lamar stepped in to steady a life or even save one. If we had to sum him up: he was a life saver and a soul saver.

Lamar loved Dr. Charles Stanley, Dr. Billy Graham, BSF, our Pastor Glenn Gilstrap, and teachers of the Word. He knew Scripture well and lived it better, helping others become the best version of themselves. In recent months, he walked a hard road—seven months in the hospital—and ultimately passed from pancreatic cancer, as did our father. Through it all he kept his humor and his hope. Every night he would say, “God willing, coffee in the morning!”

Lamar is survived by his loving mother, Fay Hinson, his brother Mike Hinson, and his sister Harriet Hinson, along with a wide circle of relatives and lifelong friends who will miss his laughter, his quick wit, and his Godly advice. We were all blessed to have Lamar as a son, a brother, and a friend.

A celebration of Lamar’s life will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 12:00 Noon at the First Presbyterian Church of Thomaston, 403 Birdsong Street, Thomaston, GA 30286. There will be a reception immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
